Harrogate South WwTW - FFD Scheme

Principal Client : Yorkshire Water

Project Client : Laing O'Rourke

Contract Value : £360,000

The Harrogate South WwTW FFD scheme was to improve water quality entering the River Nidd from Harrogate South waste water treament works which is located on Ribston Road, Plompton, near Knaresborough.

The scheme in total lasted nearly 2 years with an investment of £10 million at Harrogate South from Yorkshire Water and over 240 million throughout the region to comply with the European Freshwater Fish Directive.

This works is to be completed in two phases;

Phase 1 was the new Inlet screens installed alongside the existing with Circle providing a full design, supply, installation, test & commissioning of the electrical installation.

Phase 2 was the main scheme (all new build) at the new ASP lanes, ASP building, RAS/SAS pumps and Sludge treatment building which involved Circle providing a full design, supply, installation, test & commission of the electrical installation.

The electrical installation consisted of cable supports, SWA cabling, instrumentation, profibus, fibre optic, building services to the new buildings, site lighting and task specific lighting and lightning protection to the new structures.

ASP Lane

The cable supports on the ASP Lanes was extensive and due to the amount of equipment a specially fabricated bracket which was designed by Circle Control to mount on the outside of the handrails so the cable tray did not obstruct the walkways, these brackets also doubled up to aid the mounting of instruments and lighting.

The design meant no walkways were obstructed by protruding cable tray, light fittings or instruments making it safer for operatives with no tripping hazards whilst maintaining serviceability.

RAS / SAS Pump Area

The cable supports on the RAS / SAS pump area was not as extensive as the ASP lanes but the specially fabricated bracket which was designed by Circle Control was used as the area and walkway was compact.

The design meant no walkways were obstructed by protruding cable tray, light fittings or instruments making it safer for operatives with no tripping hazards whilst maintaining serviceability.

ASP Building

The ASP building intelligent MCC was supplied and installed by others and with all cable entering through ducts beneath the MCC this kept a clean & tidy MCC room.

The building services included a full lighting design consisting of lux plots for internal and external lighting, emergency lighting, distribution boards, small power and heating in each room which included a MCC room, control room, laboratory, toilet facilities, transformer and HV room.

Sludge Treatment Building

The Sludge treatment building was of a similar design with the Sludge treatment intelligent MCC being fed from the ASP building MCC.

The building services included a full lighting design consisting of lux plots for internal and external lighting, emergency lighting, distribution boards, small power and heating in each room which included a MCC room, centrifuge area, thickener room and drying room.

In both buildings Circle Control provided power supplies to ventilation fans, fire alarm and intruder alarm systems but these were supplied and installed by others.

ASP Building & Sludge Treatment Building

The Sludge treatment area consisted of the Sludge treatment building, centrifuge feed tanks, SAS storage tanks, liquor returns pumping station and cake silo.

The cable supports around these area's presented different challenges than before although the specially fabricated bracket which was designed by Circle Control was used to good effect around compact walkways, the 15m vertical cable supports up to silo access stairway and around tanks was slightly different.

The design meant no walkways were obstructed by protruding cable tray, light fittings or instruments making it safer for operatives with no tripping hazards whilst maintaining serviceability.

Sludge Treatment Area

All area's had external lighting and emergemcy lighting especially around the centrifuge and SAS storage tanks and cake silo area walkways / access stairwell.
